For water utilities, every drop counts. Yet many still rely on manual readings and delayed data, making it hard to spot leaks early, respond quickly to issues, or fully understand consumption patterns. Smart water metering is changing this. By connecting meters and turning usage into real-time data, utilities can work more efficiently, reduce water loss, and deliver better service to citizens. Across Europe, public initiatives like the PERTE programme are helping make this transformation a reality - at scale.
AIoTWaves, part of the Amper Group, helps water utilities modernise how they manage their networks. Its smart water metering solutions automatically collect and transmit consumption data, giving utilities a clear, up-to-date view of what is happening across their infrastructure.
In the province of Huelva, Spain, AIoTWaves was selected by GIAHSA, the region’s public water utility, to digitise water meters as part of the PERTE programme. The project covers nearly 29,000 meters rolled out in two phases, enabling remote readings and fast alerts for leaks, anomalies, and potential fraud.
For AIoTWaves, the technology inside the meter is only part of the story. The real challenge was ensuring that every meter - whether installed in a city street or a rural area - could reliably send its data, without creating complexity for the utility.
Managing multiple mobile networks would have made the project harder to deploy and maintain. AIoTWaves searched for a solution which is easy to manage and ready to scale.
AIoTWaves teamed up with 1NCE to connect all meters via cellular NB-IoT using 1NCE IoT Lifetime Flat. The meters automatically transmit data, removing the need for manual readings and on-site checks. 1NCE supported the deployment with coverage insights and network expertise, helping ensure reliable software and connectivity across both urban and rural locations. With one partner only, AIoTWaves could focus fully on delivering value to GIAHSA and its customers.
